Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that affects mainly females and a few males. Present but not apparent at birth, babies develop normally until they reach a period of stagnation and then regression where many will lose their ability to walk and talk. Most will suffer from Epilepsy and Scoliosis and will rely entirely on others for the rest of their lives. Rett syndrome is the most common cause of profound and multiple learning and physical difficulties in females in the UK. Rett UK (formally the Rett Syndrome Association UK) was founded nearly 30 years ago round a kitchen table. We are the leading support and research based charity for Rett syndrome in the UK and provide vital support services for people, families and carers living with Rett syndrome. We inform and advise medical professionals and co-ordinate Rett specific clinics where formal diagnosis occurs.

In the UK, when a baby or child dies, or a child is bereaved, many of those most affected are unable to access good quality support which meets their individual needs. This should be offered to everyone. We are working to make sure it is. We are the only national organisation that supports families and educates professionals both when a child dies and when children are bereaved, and is the leading provider of child bereavement training in the UK, in terms of the breadth of what we offer and the numbers of professionals trained (around 5000 annually). We provide ongoing professional support to bereaved children and families when someone is dying or has died. We also support the individuals and organisations that become involved with them. We do this through our training, over the phone, via our website and, when people can get to us, face to face.
